Surveillance Systems
Overview:
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) - a video/television system in which the signal is transmitted to a defined number of receivers. In the security industry this is typically known as a Video Surveillance System. They may be simple or complex but the principles are the same.
System Design:
Systems are generally comprised of the following parts that are linked in various configurations:
- the scene and its ambient lighting level
- the camera and lens viewing the scene (fixed, pan-tilt-zoom)
- the camera housing and mount (may require motor for pan-tilt-zoom function)
- the picture transmission system (coaxial, IP/twisted pair or fiber optic cabling and Wireless applications)
- the picture monitor (traditional analog, LCD or Plasma monitors)
- peripheral devices for camera switching & recording (Matrix Switchers & Digital Video Recorders)
A well designed system can significantly reduce manpower requirements although it is only as good as the administrator using it and interpreting its findings. The keys to implementing a successful system is to determine the risks and where they are located.
